IND vs ENG: Rajat Patidar Joins Test Squad, Replacing Virat Kohli for England SeriesIn light of Virat Kohli's absence from the first two Tests, Rajat Patidar has been drafted into the Indian Test squad. The middle-order batsman is already with the team in Hyderabad and attended the BCCI Annual Awards on Tuesday evening.
Following Kohli's request for a break due to personal reasons, all eyes were on the selection committee to identify his replacement. While Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul are set to comprise India's middle-order in the first Test, the squad lacked an additional backup batsman in case of last-minute injuries or the need for a concussion substitute.

It has been revealed that Patidar, returning after an eight-month injury hiatus, was the unanimous choice of the Indian team management and selectors. Hailing from Madhya Pradesh, Patidar is recognized for his composed temperament and is accustomed to batting at No.4. In domestic circuits, he is known for his assertive approach, putting pressure on bowlers right from the start.
Crucially, Patidar's inclusion in the Test squad is based on his recent impressive performance, scoring 151 for India 'A' against England Lions last week. Despite Abhimanyu Easwaran being part of the team in South Africa, concerns persist due to his lack of runs in crucial knockout games during the Ranji Trophy.
With Patidar in the lineup, there seems to be a shift away from considering Cheteshwar Pujara, who commenced the Ranji Trophy with a double century. As Patidar joins the national squad, the selectors have opted for Rinku Singh as his replacement in the India 'A' squad.
